
The full form of PIN is Postal Index Number. This is a six-digit code issued by India Post. Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Communications, introduced pin code on 15th August in the year 1972. There are total 9 postal regions across India. Out of the six digits of the pin code, the first specifies the region (e.g. North, South) and the second digit specifies the sub-region and the first three digits combined specify the sorting district and the last three digits designate the post office. The pin code is also referred to as the postal code or zip code.
