
The full form of KTM is Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen. It is an Austrian based motorcycle, bicycle and sports car company set up by an engineer Johann Trunkenpolz in 1934 in Mattighofen. KTM is best known for its super moto and motocross motorcycles and is also a leading manufacturer of these motorcycles. Kraftfahrzeug translates into English as “motor vehicle”.
Originally, it was a repair shop, but later Trunkenpolz began producing motorcycles and the first prototype named R100 was built in 1951. In 1953, Ernst Kronreif became a major shareholder and the company was renamed Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen. However, KTM is currently owned by Pierer Mobility (51.7%) and Bajaj Auto Limited International Holdings B.V (48%).
The company’s headquarters are situated in Mattighofen, Austria. Stefan Pierer has been the CEO of KTM since 1996. For four consecutive years, KTM was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in Europe. KTM sold over 3,32,000 motorcycles worldwide in 2021.
