The full form of ISA is Industry Standard Architecture. Based on the Intel 80286 microprocessor, it is a computer bus standard for IBM Personal Computers. IBM developed ISA in 1981 as part of its PC project. It was originally called PC Bus or AT Bus as well as I/O Channel. This enabled peripheral cards to be connected to the motherboard, enabling bus mastering. In the 1990s, competitors of the PC-clone industry coined the term ISA. Although it is not currently used in consumer PCs, it is still used in industrial PCs.
